A group under the aegis of the safety-is-key initiative has lamented over lack of fire fighting equipment in markets, homes and government establishments as a major setback in handling emergency fire outbreak places.
The facilitator of the group Mr. Mathew Ahiwe made the observation in Umuahia to Starport reporter while reacting to recent fire outbreaks across the state within the first week of January 2020 maintained that most of the fire incident would have been averted if the people are sensitized as to what is to be done under such conditions.
Ahiwe, an Industrial Safety Expert disclosed that attention is not given to the safety of Lives and Property within the Markets and Industrial Layouts as while condemned the situation were government agencies approve the construction of filling stations within Residential Areas, a situation which he described as being worrisome.
He observed that most markets and government establishments do not have a well- equipped safety Offices such as fire stations and other firefighting equipment that should be deployed in case of a fire outbreak.
He called for proper funding of the state fire service to assist it in the purchase of fire fighting vehicles, gadgets, provision of water boreholes within the Fire Stations at Ariariara in Aba, Industrial Market, and Ubani Market all in Umuahia and equipment in order to handle such emergency cases
Ahiwe disclosed that the major aim of the group is to draw the attention to the government on the need to take the issue of and also to guide and protect the individuals against the loss of lives and property.
