TALY ANNOUNCED 627 NEW coronavirus deaths on Friday, the largest single-day increase in the country’s COVID-19 pandemic.
The Associated Press reported the number, which marks the largest day-to-day jump since the outbreak began in the country four weeks ago.
There are currently more than 47,020 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Italy, which has been hit the hardest outside of mainland China, where the virus originated. More than 4,030 people have died in the country.
Italy’s death toll surpassed that of China when it exceeded 3,400 earlier this week, but China still has the most confirmed cases in the world, at 81,250. China has experienced more than 3,250 deaths. There are more than 263,00 confirmed cases worldwide with more than 11,140 deaths.
Italy began taking drastic measures earlier this month to curb the spread of the virus, putting its 60 million residents under lockdown. Residents are to avoid any travel out of their home province, and restrictions have been instituted for travel within their territories, as well. People are only permitted to leave their homes for essential reasons, such as to receive medical care or go food shopping.
Italian authorities are enforcing the travel ban with compliance checks on highways and local roads, only allowing travel among those with a self-declared travel exemption.
