Air Pollution as the name implies simply means a mixture of natural and man-made substances in the air we breathe. Air Pollution release who the atmosphere of various gases finely divided solids, or finally dispersed liquid aerosols at rates that exceed the natural capacity of the environment. Air Pollution consist of Chemicals or particles in the air that can harm the health of humans, animals, and plants. It can also destroy or damages the building.
The presence of chemicals in the air causes air pollution, which can cause dangerous medical conditions in humans. It is also caused by solid or liquid particles and certain gases suspended in the air. These particles and gases can come from car and truck exhaust, factories, dust, pollen, mould spores. Air pollution occurs when harmful or excessive quantities of substances are introduced into the Earth’s atmosphere, sources of air includes gases particulates. Gases particulate is the sum of all solid and liquid particles suspended in the air many of which are hazardous. This complex mixture includes both organic and inorganic particles, for examples; Dust, pollen soot, smoke, and liquid droplets.
Air Pollution Kills an estimated seven million people worldwide every year. World Health Organization (WHO) data shows that 9 out of 10 people breathe air containing high levels of pollutions. Air Pollution can also be defined as the presence of toxic chemical or compounds including those of biological origin in the air, at levels that pose a health risk.
In an even broader sense, air pollution means the presence of chemicals or compounds in the air which are usually not present and which lower the quality of the air cause detrimental changes to the quality of life such as damaging of the Ozone layer or causing global warming.
Air Pollution is probably one of the most serious environmental problems confronting our civilization today most often, it is caused by human activities such as mining, constructing, transportation, industrial work, agriculture, smelting. Etc.
However, natural processes such as volcanic erupting and wildfires may also pollute the air, but their occurrences is rare and they usually have a local effect, unlike human activities that are ubiquitous that causes air pollution and contribute to the global pollution of the air every single day.
In air pollution, the chemical compounds that lower the air quality are usually referred to as air pollution. These compounds may be in the air in two major terms. These two major forms of air pollution are:
– In a gaseous form (as gases)
– In a solid form (As particulate malted suspend in the air.
In most cases, air pollutants cannot be seen or milled. However, that does not mean that they do not exist in high enough amount to be a health hazard. Additionally, a number of gases are linked to the so-called “greenhouse effect” which means that those gases retain more heat and thus contribute to the overall global warming. The most common example of greenhouse gas is Carbon dioxide which is emitted from many industrial processes. Another example is methane, which is also an explosive gas.
THE EFFECTS OF AIR POLLUTION ON HUMAN HEALTH
Air pollution has serious effects on the human health depending on the level of exposure and the type of pollutant inhaled, these effects can vary, ranging from simple symptoms like coughing and the irritation of the respiratory tract to acute conditions like asthma and chronic lung diseases.
Skin problems and irritation can develop due to prolonged exposure to several air pollutants, and a variety of cancer forms may develop after inhaling air contaminants.
Air pollutants that have serious negative effects in human health can be classified as toxic and non –toxic.
SOLUTION FOR AIR POLLUTION
The most basic solution for air pollution is to move away from fossil fuels, replacing them with alternative energies like solar, wind and geothermal. Producing clean energy is crucial, but equally important is to reduce our consumption of energy by adopting responsible habits and using more efficient devices. The other solution for air pollution is as follows:
- Cleaning Smokestacks and Exhaust Pipes: in power plants and manufacturing industries, electrostatic smoke precipitators that use static electricity or trap soot and dust from the gaseous waste leaving he smokestacks is a significant technological cleaning measure which can be used to control air pollution.
- Law and Regulations: the law and regulations of air pollution always offer a fantastic measure for tracking the air pollution menace. Many cities and countries that were once heavily polluted have substantially attained clean air mainly due to the institutionalization of anti-pollution laws.
- Use of Renewable or Green Energy sources: In these types of air pollution, opting for alternative or renewable energy sources to produce power presents a practical solution to air pollution. Alternative energy sources include wind energy, geothermal energy, solar energy and hydropower energy.
- Industrial level prevents methods: Multifarious ways can be used at the individuals’ level to reduce or prevent air pollution. That is, individual who is aware of the causes and effects of pollution can encourage family, friends or colleagues to use the bus, train or bike when moving from one place to another, but for shorter instances, it is even better just to walk or ride a bike by doing so, there will be lesser vehicles on the road and as such, less emission.
- Raising awareness through campaigns and advance awareness creation is the number one factor to consider because it will make people realize and understand the sources and effects of air pollution – from this point, it makes easier for people to take personal or collective initiatives to reduce air pollution.
