Chief Press Secretary to the Governor
June 19, 2019
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE APPOINTMENT
Trailing the path of all other governors in the Federation but a few, His excellency Chief Emeka Ihedioha is currently appointing persons to stir the ship of Imo State’s political bureaucracy. Whatever criteria the former Federal lawmaker might have adopted in making these appointments are personal to him. However, what prompted this piece is solely the noise that the appointment was greeted with about few days ago .
Nevertheless, the whole noise in Imo State over appointments has become an eloquent testament to the livid mindset of the citizenry about the purposes for which these political offices serve. Rather than appreciate the fact that an appointment essentially bestowed on the appointee is an inescapable responsibility to make personal sacrifices, to leave his comfort zone, “abandon” his wonderful family and miss their love in order to work for a greater Imo State, the people tend to see an appointment as a call to chop! Herein lies the problem. This is why there is noise over appointments so far.
We now live in a society where people can kill, bribe and blackmail simply because of political appointments. A man who obtains an appointment by means of killing, to which end will he put such office? More killings, of course!
Appalling beyond imagination is the fact that in the appointment disputations far, issues of competence, credibility and character are hardly mentioned as these are bedrock behind this government political appointment. In order words it is strictly on merit. Little wonder till now, there is no person in Imo who has been able to unearth and publish any damning report on any person appointed by the nascent administration. Rather than making false claims and accusation on the list of appointees, I think it is more relevant to tell us that a person cannot deliver value because he failed when he was tried in the past or that there is an allegation of fraud hanging on his neck than to fault his appointment because of his birth, his class, his creed or his station in life. Let us not forget in a hurry that the greatness of a nation like America was earned through the efforts of the sons of the former slaves and the sons of the former slave owners too.
It is no surprise to realize that the most nauseating argument about the Imo appointment impasse is oozing from no other source other than the camp of Rochas Okorocha and his son-in-law, Uche Nwosu. To these folks, appointment should be given only to children of the poorest of the poor as he fondly calls them. In my opinion, this trade of thinking contributed largely to the failure of that administration. Where they parceled out appointments as take home benefits and empowerment schemes, and rewarded blind loyalty instead of credibility and competence in the face of work. This could be traceable as to why a one time motor driver named Uche Nwosu could become a multi billionaire through public office in five just years. Any government that follows that trajectory is already configured to fail on arrival.
As governor Ihedioha continues to stir the of the leadership of this government, let all and sundry realize that it is his right to will, to choose and to do his good pleasure on who he deems fit for any position of power. But, above all, in as much as it is our own right to hold him accountable for the actions and in-actions of those he appointment, the citizens should learn to balance their judgement with verifiable facts and reasoning, for uneasy lies the head that wears the crown.
